Man of peace

M. Benedetti

Mario Benedetti, Uruguayan poet delighted in his time with his creations and compositions of love, pain and experience. He had chained words for different moments in life and left us an inheritance of literary treasures to enjoy. One of them, man of peace.

To kill the man of peace
to hit his forehead clean of nightmares
they had to become a nightmare
to beat the man of peace
they had to gather all the hatreds
and also the planes and tanks
to beat the man of peace
they had to bomb it make it flame
because the man of peace was a fortress

To kill the man of peace
they had to unleash the war
to beat the man of peace
and silence her modest and piercing voice
they had to push terror into the abyss
and kill more to keep killing
to beat the man of peace
they had to murder him many times
because the man of peace was a fortress

To kill the man of peace
they had to imagine it was a troop
an army a host a brigade
they had to believe it was another army
but the man of peace was just a people
and he had in his hands a rifle and a mandate
and more tanks were needed, more grudges
more bombs more planes more disgrace
because the man of peace was a fortress

To kill the man of peace
to hit his forehead clean of nightmares
they had to become a nightmare
to beat the man of peace
they had to join death forever
kill and kill more to keep killing
and condemned to armored solitude
to kill the man who was a town
they had to stay without the town
