Proposal for nanotechnology standards to protect consumers

A report presented today by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) accuses the US government of a huge failure to use its authority to protect citizens from the potentially dangerous effects of nanoscale chemistry. The accusation has been brought by scientists and policy experts at the NRDC.

NRDC scientists have created a regulatory framework for nanomaterials, a new class of super small industrial materials that have already been used in more than 500 products such as baby wipes, sunscreens, toothpaste and lipsticks. .

“Preventive regulation must be put on a par to guarantee the safety of workers and consumers. Without regulations regarding product labeling, consumers are in ignorance and vulnerable to exposure to a new generation of untested and likely dangerous chemicals. People deserve unbiased information, ”says Jennifer Sass, an NRDC nanotechnology expert or author of the report.
